木のスプーン

バンドソーと小刀を使ってスプーンを削りだした。
型紙でだいたいのカタチを決める。
曲面がいくつもつながってひとつのカタチとなる。
刃物を研いでは削る。
木の塊からひとつの3次曲面を探していく。
うまくいかないのは技術が未熟だからだけではなく、
カタチが描けていないからだ。
イメージを鮮明にすると手が動く。
手と思考のせめぎあい。
手は思考を促し、脳は手を動かす。

ウォールナットとメープル、オイル仕上げ

Wooden spoon

I made wooden spoon with a small bandsaw and Japanese hand knife.
I start with the rough outline of the spoon using paper.
Spoon contains several curved surfaces.
Sharpen the edge and carve the wood.
I try to find the correct 3 dimentional curved surface.
The reason why it doesn't work well is because of not only my poor skill
but also the lack of my thought for the form. It's a matter of design.
My hands move smoothly if I have a clear image of the form.
Very interesting connection of the thoughts and hands.
Hands accelerate thoughts and my brain control the hands.
